What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is an FDA approved drug that was originally created for type-2 diabetes. It acts on the glucagon like peptide receptor-1 in the hypothalamus and hindbrain portions of the brain to make patients feel full. As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it stimulates insulin production and suppresses glucagon secretion. In so doing, it significantly reduces patients’ appetites causing them to lose significant amounts of weight when combined with proper diet and exercise.
What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide belongs to a class of compounds called GIP (glucagon-like peptide) and GLP-1 receptor agonists. It has been shown to stimulate insulin production, delay gastric emptying time, promote satiety, and target the brain’s appetite control center, reducing food cravings and increasing feelings of fullness. It has also shown great promise in leading to a significant and sustainable weight loss.
Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide aid weight loss by reducing appetite and increasing satiety. They slow gastric emptying and limit food intake, leading to reduced calories and increased weight loss.
GLP-1 agonists are a class of medications that mainly help manage blood sugar (glucose) levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Some GLP-1 agonists can also help treat obesity.
GLP-1 agonists are most often injectable medications, meaning you inject a liquid medication with a needle and syringe. You give the shots in the fatty tissue just under your skin (subcutaneous injection). Areas of your body you can give the injections include your belly, outer thighs, upper buttocks and the backs of your arms.
Other names for this medication class include:
• Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists.
• GLP-1 receptor agonists.
• Incretin mimetics.
• GLP-1 analogs.
These medications are relatively new. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first GLP-1 agonist (exenatide) in 2005. Researchers are still learning about their other potential uses and benefits. GLP-1 agonists alone can’t treat Type 2 diabetes or obesity. Both conditions require other treatment strategies, like lifestyle and dietary changes.
Disclaimer:
Commonly marketed name brand drugs are currently listed on the Drug Shortages list. “A drug can be compounded if it is currently in shortage.” APC President Scott Brunner told Drug Topics®. FDA-approved semaglutide drugs remain ‘currently in shortage’ on the FDA drug shortage list (https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/drugshortages/default.cfm),” APC said. “Currently in shortage” does not necessarily mean that a drug is completely unavailable, only that there may not be sufficient supply to meet demand. FDA guidance states that if a drug is listed as “currently in shortage”- it may be compounded. The compounded drugs are compounded drug products that have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality and FDA-approved products containing semaglutide are available. The compounded drug is not a substitution for an FDA-approved drug; rather, the prescriber has intentionally prescribed a compounded drug in a specific dosage strength or form or combination of medications that they believe is right for their patient.
